Call for Applications for the Funding of Global Health Initiatives & for the Funding of International Networking Activities in Research

The Medical Faculty seeks to strengthen its international network in research and launches two calls: call for applications for the funding of Global Health Initiatives and the call for applications for the funding of International Networking Activities in Research. Both calls are aimed at senior researchers of the Medical Faculty and their international partners who wish to jointly build a sustainable academic cooperation.

Call for Applications for the Funding of Global Health Initiatives:

The Medical Faculty has earmarked a budget of CHF 300’000 per year over a period of up to 5 years. No matching funds will be expected. Funded are global health initiatives, aiming at strengthening or building international academic links. Please find out more about the call in the PDF-document below.

Call for Applications for the Funding of International Networking Activities in Research:

The Medical Faculty has earmarked a budget of CHF 150’000 per year over a period of up to 5 years. The partner institution will be expected to provide 1:1 matching funds over the same period of time with new ring-fenced funding for the initiative. Funded are networking activities in research, aiming at strengthening or building academic links with an international research partner. Johanna Dürmüller-Bol DBMR Research Award 2023

The call for proposals for the Johanna Dürmüller-Bol DBMR Research Award 2023 is now open. The Johanna Dürmüller-Bol DBMR Research Award supports a young researcher of the Medical Faculty leading a promising translational research project to gather data for pursuing an application for a peer-reviewed, competitive grant.

Who can apply: MD, PhD, or MD-PhD researchers of the Medical Faculty, who hold the title of Postdoctoral Fellow, Instructor or Research Associate, and are under the direct supervision of a mentor.

Clinical Medicine Plus” Scholarship - Call for Submissions 2023

The «Clinical Medicine Plus» scholarship is aimed at clinically active physicians during or immediately after completing specialist training. The candidate must be proposed and supported by a mentor from his or her institution in Switzerland, who guarantees the expediency of the training and the quality of the host institution and accompanies the stay as an external tutor. Period for submission: February 1 – May 31, 2023

Grant for Protected Research Time

With the announcement of grants for "Protected Research Time", the Medical Faculty supports the possibility of creating clinical research time for young academics in the medical service sector.

Young investigator grants for patient-oriented and for translational research (with protected research time).

The Dean's Office of the Medical Faculty and the Department of Teaching and Research of Insel Gruppe AG jointly offer Young Investigator Grants. These are aimed at young assistand and senior physicians who pursue ambitions in research in addition to their clinical activities, as well as PhD students of the Graduate School for Health Science (GHS) in the Clinical Sciences Program. "Protected research time" provides the opportunity to create clinical research time for junior academic staff in the medical services area.

The two grants have different orientations. The Dean's Office call is for individuals with translational research projects. The call from the Department of Teaching and Research is for physicians from Insel Gruppe AG with a patient-oriented research project.

The young academics grant for translational research (Dean's Office): "Protected Research Time" for clinically active junior researchers is being offered for the second time this year. Deadline for applications is November 30, 2022, and only online applications will be considered.

Applications for funding of research equipment are to be submitted by the institutes and clinics to the Resources Committee. An annual deadline for submission takes place in October each year. Further information and forms can be found here

Faculty Membership Based on Excellence

The Medical Faculty has an interest in promoting excellence in research and teaching. We offer the opportunity to join the faculty to researchers conducting excellent research and/or teaching.
he application can be submitted annually to the Strategy and Promotion Commission until April 30. The next call is open until 30 April 2023.
Membership begins on August 1 (fall semester).

Project support by Alumni MedBern

The Alumni MedBern association supports projects within the Faculty of Medicine that serve teaching, research or public relations. In particular, innovative projects that benefit a broad circle of staff and students of the Faculty are to be supported. Fund for the financing of employment extensions for young researchers based on COVID-19

This fund is intended to support particularly talented students with high potential who have already achieved a certain scientific output and are enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year at a Graduate School of the University of Bern. The salary of doctoral students can be financed from this fund for a maximum of 6 months.
