The Department offers an integrated range of medical services and is the largest neurological clinic in Switzerland. Its specialist teams diagnose and treat people with diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, neuromuscular transmission, and muscular system.

  • Clinical, translational, basic, and nanotechnological research
  • Topics and teams: sleep, stroke, epilepsy, neuroimmunology, neurorehabilitation, Parkinson/movement disorders, functional neurological disorders, dementia/neurodegeneration, biomarkers
  • Teaching at multiple levels: students of medicine and biomedicine, graduate and postgraduate students
  • Promotion of young researchers through an internal funding scheme (focus on excellence and diversity)
  • Selected research and teaching highlights: 8 SNSF grants awarded in 2023 with a total funding sum of CHF 5,834,717 (Project Funding, Synergia, IICT, Spark, Scholars at Risk, Flexibility Grant); Prolongation of SNSF Scholars at Risk Grants for Dr. med. Kseniia Zub (Sleep Medicine) and PD Dr. Kateryna Antonenko (Stroke) both from Ukraine; Kick-off of the “SFCNS Swiss Brain Health Plan 2023 – 2033”, bringing together experts of various neurological and psychiatric specialties as well as other stakeholders from politics, hospitals, insurances, etc.; creation of an international Certificate of Advances Studies (CAS) in Brain Health (start of first cohort planned for fall 2024); re-launch of the International Master (MAS) in Sleep Medicine with over 20 international students.
