sitem-insel is a National Center of Excellence for Translational Medicine that accelerates and streamlines research for the benefit of patients, society, and science. Located on the Insel Campus Bern, a wide variety of units from the hospital, industry, research, and education are networked under one roof.

  • Non-profit public-private partnership in close cooperation with the University of Bern, the Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, industry, and start-ups
  • Core emphasis lies on maintaining and building a diverse and international translational medicine network creating and fostering the unique ecosystem of relevant stakeholders from clinic, industry, research, and education to reduce silos between the different disciplines
  • State-of-the-art research and development infrastructure in the sitem-insel building catalyzes a multidisciplinary collaborative approach to drive ‘bench to bedside’ and ‘bedside to bench’ innovation:
  • 60% Medical devices, 30% medicinal and biotech products, 10% diagnostics
  • 34 units from clinics, industry, research, and education at sitem-insel
  • 25 start-ups from three different countries incubated by the Sitem StartUp Club with its Sitem MedTech HUB
  • Promoting the best minds in science and medicine with our in-house sitem-insel School (Continuing Education programs) and the sitem-insel Clinical Anatomy Training and Research (CATR) unit (Surgical training and product development)
  • Continuing Education (international students from 10 different countries) in: Translational Medicine and Biomedical Entrepreneurship, Medical Device Regulatory Affairs & Quality Assurance, and Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging
  • Surgical training and product development in the CATR unit in several medical fields, including gynecology, orthopedy, oral surgery, thoracic surgery, neuropelveology and robotics. The CATR unit is proud to work with several Swiss medical societies, associations, as well as renowned international medical devices companies and promising start-ups.
