Research: Each of the six departments conducts research projects within the context of forensic sciences. The Institute of Forensic Medicine in Bern is world-leading in forensic physics and ballistics, forensic imaging, and alcohol consumption markers. Furthermore, forensic genetic projects and traffic medicine projects have been successfully performed.

Teaching: The Institute of Forensic Medicine in Bern is responsible for the training and continuing education of students of medicine and jurisprudence, medical personnel, and the institutions of the administration of justice and the police.
