The need for theoretical knowledge and practical skills of physicians and other professionals in the field of sleep medicine is constantly growing.

This postgraduate course from the University of Bern and Università della Svizzera Italiana

is offered to meet the demands of increasing sleep disorders worldwide and to provide knowledge on diagnosis and treatment of sleep problems on an evidence-based basis.

The main objective of this programme is to provide a solid and updated theoretical and practical knowledge of sleep medicine. This programme is also designed to enable participants to manage a sleep laboratory or take on a leadership role in the field of sleep medicine.

In addition, this Master serves as preparation for those participants who wish to obtain the Certificate in Somnology established by the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) since 2012. This certificate is not only recognised by all countries of the European Union, but is also considered one of the most prestigious sleep medicine degrees in the world. This certificate is accessible and available to individuals from all over the world.

The program has been developed by the University Hospital Bern&Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale Lugano in close collaboration with the European Sleep Foundation

ESF as well as 13 international partner Universities. The postgraduate course is under the patronage of the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS), the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), the Swiss Society for Sleep Research, Sleep Medicine and Chronobiology (SSSSC), the German Society of sleep Research and  Medicine (DGSM) and the German Society of Pneumology (DGP).

The programme aims to train the next generation of clinicians and researchers in sleep care.

The program is intended for professionals who are already working in a corresponding area of medicine with a degree in health related disciplines, natural science or engineering or

in a related field (with an academic degree such as master, phd, MD or an equivalent qualification) who wish to gain an in-depth knowledge of sleep medicine.

The contents of the program is based upon the "Catalogue of knowledge and skills for sleep medicine" issued by the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) supplemented by other topics:

• Anatomy&physiology of the sleep-wake&circadian systems

• Sleep-wake assessments

• Sleep&cognition / sleep&psychology

• Insomnias, circadian disorders, sleep & psychiatric disorders

• Narcolepsy&hypersomnias

• Disorders of consciousness, sleep & neurologic disorders

• Parasomnias, sleep&epilepsy

• Sleep breathing disorders / sleep & cardiologic disorders

• Pediatric sleep

• Social, economic, organisational & research aspects
